Sormano Astronomical Observatory: Close encounter between comet C/2013 A1 and Mars, diagrams and orbit evolution

Last update: October 20, 2014

Computations: Piero Sicoli, Francesco Manca (obs.sormano@alice.it).

Dedicated page to the future close encounter of the comet C/2013 A1 and the planet Mars and its orbit evolution (see also our CEIP page a table that reports, sorted by date, minor bodies with a possible minimum planet-miss distance within about 0,5 millions km or 0.003342 A.U. from the inner planets) .

All diagrams were extrapolated from internal software used also to compute close encounters between asteroids and the Earth ( SAEL and MBPL ) or the inner planets

Close encounter between comet C/2013 A1 (SIDING SPRING) and Mars on October 19, 2014

Image taken at Sormano Observatory on March 21, 2013 of the Hyperbolic comet C/2013 A1 (SIDING SPRING) when the object was at low elevation for the Observatory' location.

Image taken at Sormano Observatory on November 07, 2013 of the Hyperbolic comet C/2013 A1 (SIDING SPRING)

Animation of the Hyperbolic comet C/2013 A1 (SIDING SPRING) during its close encounter with Mars on October 19, 2014. The comet was very low on the horizon in reference to our observatory.

Image taken on October 19, 2014 at 17:21:02 UT, shows a tail.
